Metal is huge. We can all agree on that right? So why does everyone think that a Metal fan is tat covered spikey haired chain smoking brain dead physical laborer? Metal is bigger than that. Former Major League Baseball player Mike Piazza is a huge fan. Prince Harry supposedly loves the Metal. Do they look like a typical Metal? How about Jack Black? Jada Pinkett Smith? Nick Cage? Chris Hemsworth? We don't all look like the Metal God, or Ozzy or Lemmy. Right now I'm cranking Youthanasia and Peace Sells as I sit as a desk monkey nerd at a fortune 100 company. I don't have any tats, I don't own a motorcycle and I've never been arrested. (okay there was that one time when I was in the backseat with a girl and the cops... well I've said too much. Moving on...) The guys in my Metal Book Club are all suburban middle agers (except the Kid of course) and other than CP (the real wild child) you'd never think we are all Metal heads. That's my point.
Metal is bigger than the stereotypes. VH1 Classic, TMS, others trying to appeal to the Metal market, open up your strike zone. Don't pigeon hole the music, don't pigeon hole the listener. We come in all shapes, sizes, clothes and socioeconomic levels. I know it must be scary to think that Metal is normal, but guess what, it is. Metal classics are in Mini-van commercials, shopping malls, movie soundtracks. Metal is everywhere, and more and more, Metal is more and more people.
So VH1 Classics, listen to this die hard Metal fan.
Start representing all of us and not just the stereotypes.
